Central Italy Earthquake Relief Fund Nears $500,000 Mark
Funding needs rise as more earthquakes hit central Italy

The Central Italy Earthquake Relief Fund (CIERF) has reached almost $500,000 in donations received and pledged.

Significant additional funds are being raised through ongoing donations and major fundraising events such as "Una Serata Esclusiva" an event held on Nov. 12. Hosted by the Remo Ferri Group at Ferrari of Ontario, the evening was an incredible success, featuring the best in Italian food, wine and high-end automobiles, and raised an estimated $400,000. Sergio Marchionne, CEO of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V., was the guest of honour.

CIERF plans to raise several million dollars to help the hardest-hit communities in Umbria, Lazio and Marche get back on their feet. Villa Charities and other CIERF organizers are reaching out to all Canadians to contribute to a legacy that will aid the towns and villages where many lives were lost, families destroyed and streets laid in ruin.

"Together, we can provide a significant contribution that will have a lasting and profound impact on the residents, communities and economies that have suffered enormously," said Eligio Gaudio, President of CIERF and President and CEO of Villa Charities Inc.

Central Italy's need for assistance has grown following other major tremors in the region, including a 6.6-magnitude earthquake in Marche and Umbria on Oct. 30 - the most powerful to hit Italy since 1980.

We urge you to donate online at www.centralitalyearthquakerelieffund.com, or in person at the Columbus Centre, at any branch of IC Savings, or by contacting Jean Jarvis at jjarvis@villacharities.com. We also hope you will attend an upcoming fundraising event; listings are posted on the CIERF website.

Daycare Launches Social and Emotional Skills Program

Columbus Children's Centres recently launched "Seeds of Empathy," a respected international program that fosters social, emotional and literacy skills in children 3-5 years old while providing professional development for their educators.

Under the program, teachers initially lead theme-based sessions that explore different feelings and emotions through stories and activities. Then a volunteer mother and baby visit every three weeks, and the children are taught about feelings and emotions while watching the baby grow.

Columbus Children's Centres had to demonstrate a strong commitment to the program before joining a limited number of new daycare centres accepted by Roots of Empathy, the organization behind the program. It is offered in early childhood learning centres in California, Germany, England and many other places. Another version of the program is offered to school-aged children.

Roots of Empathy seeks to build caring, peaceful and civil societies through the development of empathy in children and adults. The organization provides all of the materials and training used in the program.
