Funding Need Grows After Another Earthquake Strikes Central Italy
Central Italy Earthquake Relief Fund Renews Call for Donations

Central Italy's need for assistance is greater than ever following another major earthquake in the region on Sunday.

The 6.6-magnitude earthquake, which centred on the regions of Marche and Umbria, was the most powerful one to hit Italy since 1980. Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, responding to the new wave of devastation, said the most impacted area represents the "soul of our country". The quake added significantly to the damage caused by a series of powerful tremors since the August 2016 earthquake that struck several central Italian communities including Amatrice.

The latest earthquake is a powerful reminder of the affected communities' need for assistance to recover from the extensive damage and for help to get the region's people back on their feet. In August, the Italian Canadian community mobilized to create a registered charity, the Central Italy Earthquake Relief Fund (CIERF), to provide that support.

We urge you to donate online at We also accept donations in person at the Columbus Centre, at any branch of IC Savings, or by contacting Jean Jarvis at

"Together, we can provide a significant contribution that will have a lasting and profound impact on the residents, communities and economies that have suffered enormously," said Eligio Gaudio, President of CIERF and President and CEO of Villa Charities Inc.

Through fundraisers, donor pledges, government financial support and a coordinated communications campaign, CIERF plans to raise several million dollars to assist the hardest-hit communities with their long-term rebuilding efforts. To date, CIERF's network of supporters has raised almost $100,000. But much more is needed to provide the level of assistance required.

There are numerous fundraising events planned across Canada. To view the list of upcoming events, visit our website. We hope you will support CIERF by attending one of these events, and please share the information with your friends, families and colleagues.

We also urge you to consider organizing events within your community to raise funds for CIERF, and if you have an event planned, we hope you will consider directing the funds to this very important cause.
